Mudjacking & Concrete Leveling in Ferguson, MO

Ferguson began in 1855 as a depot on the Wabash Railroad, and its population nearly doubled between 1950 and 1960. That means many of its streets have walks, steps and driveways that have been settling for 60 years or more. We lift that concrete back toward level with mudjacking.

Small holes are drilled, grout is pumped in to fill the void and lift the slab, and the holes are patched with the slab back to level. Void Level again Soil washes out. The slab sinks. Concrete Problems We Fix Around Ferguson

Ferguson's homes range from early houses near the old depot to the large wave built after 1950. Here's what usually goes wrong with the concrete around them.

Front entry steps and stoop pulling away from a brick home

Porch steps on older homes

Ferguson's population tripled between 1920 and 1940, so some homes here are close to 100 years old. As the soil under their concrete porch steps settles, they lean away from the house and leave a gap at the top step.

Raised sidewalk edge creating a trip hazard

Sidewalk panels with a trip edge

The city says sidewalks are the homeowner's responsibility in Ferguson. A panel that has dropped below the next one is the most common problem, and it can usually be raised back flush.

Driveways that drop at the garage

Ferguson grew from about 11,600 people in 1950 to more than 22,000 in 1960. Driveways from that building wave have had plenty of time for the soil under them to compact, especially next to the garage.

Patio slab settled away from a brick wall

Patios on lots that slope toward Maline Creek

Maline Creek runs through Ferguson. On yards that fall toward it, runoff moves under patios and carries silt away, and the slab tips toward the low side.

Before & After: What Mudjacking Fixes

These are the kinds of slabs we lift every week across St. Louis and St. Charles counties. The slab stays in place; we raise it and fill the empty space underneath.

How Mudjacking Works

Small drilled holes in a settled concrete walkway before mudjacking

1. Drill small holes

We drill a few small holes through the settled slab to reach the empty or soft spots underneath.

2. Pump and lift

A cement-based grout is pumped under the slab. It fills the voids first, then slowly raises the concrete back toward level.

3. Patch and clean up

Once the slab is where it should be, we patch the holes and clean up. Most jobs are finished the same day.

    Why Concrete Sinks in Ferguson

The Missouri Geological Survey's map of the Clayton quadrangle, which takes in Ferguson and the Maline Creek valley, describes this area as heavily built up on loess-covered uplands. The wind-blown silt (loess) comes in two layers that can total about 80 feet, and the lower Roxana layer holds more clay. Under it is limestone and shale bedrock, covered by 10 to 80 feet of soil.

The map notes that the boundary between the two loess layers can act as a slide plane where the ground is steep, and that the risk goes up where loess rests on shale. Where the loess is thin, the limestone below can be karstic. In everyday terms, the silt here is firm when dry but gives way when water keeps reaching it.

On older lots, years of roof water and runoff open hollows under walks, steps and patios. Mudjacking pumps a cement-based grout into those hollows to fill them and raise the slab. Sending downspout water away from the concrete helps keep new hollows from forming.

Nick and his family turned my highly uneven, and very large, concrete driveway and pad into an almost perfectly level sheet. It was amazing to see. Nick and his family were awesome to work with, the price was fair, and the results were amazing. I highly recommend them.

Nick and his team were extremely punctual, hard working and completed the task on time. We had almost fifty feet of foundation cracks repaired as well as the driveway mudjacked. Would highly recommend for future work.

I wrote a bad review earlier about bad communication. His family was very ill that is why he was slow to get back to me. I ended up hiring them for a large driveway leveling job and it turned out great. Great quality and great pricing. I have referred St. Louis Mud Jacking multiple times since my project and I will continue to use them on my properties. I wish there was a way to remove my old review but I wasn't able to. Great company!!!!

    Ferguson Mudjacking FAQ

Who fixes the sidewalk in front of my Ferguson home?

The City of Ferguson's Public Works FAQ says sidewalks are the homeowner's responsibility, while the city, county or state maintains the street itself. For street problems, the city lists its Public Works Street Division at 314-521-8373. If a sidewalk panel in front of your home has sunk but is still in one piece, lifting it is often cheaper than replacing it.

Do I need a permit to fix my driveway in Ferguson?

Ferguson requires a driveway permit to install, replace or change a driveway or curb cut, and a residential building permit for driveway apron or sidewalk work. Lifting an existing slab is a different kind of job, so call Ferguson Public Works at (314) 521-7721 to confirm what applies before we start.

Can you lift porch steps on an older Ferguson home?

Usually, if the steps are solid poured concrete and haven't broken apart. We raise them back toward the house to close the gap. Brick steps or steps with large cracks may need a different repair, and we'll tell you if that's the case.

Who takes care of Maline Creek?

According to the City of Ferguson, the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) is responsible for creeks, streams and sewers in the city. The city lists MSD customer service at (314) 768-6260. Slabs in your own yard are yours, and we can lift those.
