Mudjacking & Concrete Leveling in University City, MO

University City was incorporated in 1906 as E.G. Lewis's planned model city, and it grew faster than any other Missouri city between 1910 and 1920. Its south end is full of streetcar-era homes, and its north end filled in after World War II. Concrete from both eras is settling, and we lift it back with mudjacking.

Small holes are drilled, grout is pumped in to fill the void and lift the slab, and the holes are patched with the slab back to level. Void Level again Soil washes out. The slab sinks. Concrete Problems We Fix Around University City

Between century-old houses, post-war neighborhoods, the River des Peres and two busy commercial strips, U City gives us a wide mix of work.

Front entry steps and stoop pulling away from a brick home

Porches and steps on streetcar-era homes

Homes near Delmar Boulevard date to the early 1900s. Their concrete steps and porch slabs have had a long time to settle, and many now tilt away from the house.

Driveways on post-war homes in the north end

The city's biggest building boom came after World War II. Many driveways from that period are well over 60 years old, and sunken panels at the joints are common.

Slabs near the River des Peres

The river flooded homes here in July 2022. When water gets under a patio or walk, it can carry soil out and leave a hollow, and the slab drops into it.

Storefront walks on Delmar and Olive

The Delmar Loop and the Olive Boulevard business strip see heavy foot traffic. A sunken walk at a shop door is a trip risk you can fix without closing for days.

Before & After: What Mudjacking Fixes

These are the kinds of slabs we lift every week across St. Louis and St. Charles counties. The slab stays in place; we raise it and fill the empty space underneath.

How Mudjacking Works

Small drilled holes in a settled concrete walkway before mudjacking

1. Drill small holes

We drill a few small holes through the settled slab to reach the empty or soft spots underneath.

2. Pump and lift

A cement-based grout is pumped under the slab. It fills the voids first, then slowly raises the concrete back toward level.

3. Patch and clean up

Once the slab is where it should be, we patch the holes and clean up. Most jobs are finished the same day.

Why Concrete Sinks in University City

University City sits on the Clayton quadrangle mapped by the Missouri Geological Survey. The map shows two layers of wind-blown silt (loess) up to about 80 feet thick, with the lower Roxana layer holding more clay than the Peoria layer above it. Where the loess is thin over limestone, the rock can be karstic, and where it sits on shale, water can perch and weaken the soil above.

A University City Storm Water Commission report found that most of the damage from the July 26, 2022 flood came from the River des Peres, and called it the most flood-prone stream in Missouri. The report put the damage at about $30 million.

Soil that has been soaked, whether by a flood or by years of downspout water, loses strength and settles. Mudjacking fills the space left under the slab and raises it, and keeping water moving away from the slab helps it stay up.

Nick and his family turned my highly uneven, and very large, concrete driveway and pad into an almost perfectly level sheet. It was amazing to see. Nick and his family were awesome to work with, the price was fair, and the results were amazing. I highly recommend them.

Nick and his team were extremely punctual, hard working and completed the task on time. We had almost fifty feet of foundation cracks repaired as well as the driveway mudjacked. Would highly recommend for future work.

I wrote a bad review earlier about bad communication. His family was very ill that is why he was slow to get back to me. I ended up hiring them for a large driveway leveling job and it turned out great. Great quality and great pricing. I have referred St. Louis Mud Jacking multiple times since my project and I will continue to use them on my properties. I wish there was a way to remove my old review but I wasn't able to. Great company!!!!

    University City Mudjacking FAQ

Who fixes the sidewalk in front of my University City home?

University City's Public Works department looks after about 110 miles of sidewalk and takes reports on right-of-way problems with streets, sidewalks, curbs and tree lawns. For a public sidewalk, call Public Works at (314) 505-8548. The city also requires a Public Works permit before any construction in the right-of-way. Your driveway, walks, steps and patio are yours, and that's where we come in.

Can you lift a patio or walk after flood damage?

If the slab is still in one piece, often yes. Floodwater can wash soil out from under concrete, and we fill that void as we lift. If the slab broke apart, we'll tell you replacement is the better choice.

Can you level steps on an early 1900s house?

Usually, if they're solid concrete. We raise them back against the house so the gap at the top closes. Brick or crumbling steps need a different repair, and we'll say so.

Do you work on Loop and Olive Boulevard businesses?

Yes. We lift walks, entries and parking slabs for shops and restaurants, and we try to schedule around your open hours.

Do you serve the areas around University City?

Yes. We work in Clayton, Ladue, Creve Coeur, Brentwood, Ferguson and across St. Louis and St. Charles counties.
